Congress MP Rasheed Masood sentenced to four years jail in recruitment scam

NEW DELHI: Congress Member of
Parliament (MP) Rasheed Masood, convicted in the MBBS recruitment scam,
was sentenced to four years of imprisonment by a Delhi court on Tuesday. Rashid Masood will be
taken to Tihar
jail on Tuesday.
The Rajya Sabha member is the first MP to be disqualified after being convicted under the Prevention of Corruptions Act.
All students involved sentenced to 1 year jail. IPS officer Gurdayal Singh and IAS officer AK Roy were also sentenced to four years of imprisonment.
66-year-old Masood was disqualified under the provisions of Representation of the People Act that disqualifies anybody who has been convicted under sections of various laws including the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
A Special CBI court had held Rajya Sabha member Rasheed Masood guilty in a case of corruption and other offences.
Masood, Minister of Health in the VP Singh Government between 1990 and 1991, was held guilty of fraudulently nominating undeserving candidates to MBBS seats allotted to Tripura in medical colleges across the country from the central pool.
Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav was on Monday convicted in a fodder scam case by a CBI court in Ranchi. (With inputs from agencies)
